Lessons will focus predominantly on fiddle tunes and styles of Appalachia, but we will touch on a broad range of traditional styles including Cajun, Hispanic, Bluegrass, Blues, and Country fiddling.
The study of old time fiddling – with its emphasis on rhythm, groove, improvisation, and listening – makes an excellent supplement to classical or suzuki training, though such training is not necessary to learning this style. My primary goal as a teacher is to prepare students for old time jams. Toward that end, lessons will cover technique, theory, repertoire, history, and listening skills. Special attention will be paid to bowing techniques that are essential to the sound of this style and yet often elusive for classically-trained violinists.
